What is Web Application?

A web application is an app version that runs on the browsers like Google Chrome. The program runs on a web server, rather than on the PC, or local server for traditional applications.

Web applications have become an essential component of business in Malaysia. By using web applications, businesses can now develop and become simpler, and achieve their objectives much faster. These applications can help target numerous clients and customers at a time. Organizations are rapidly embracing this aspect of the internet by creating web applications with the help of developers to meet their business demands.

How does it work?

Web apps are made up of two parts—the front end and the back end—that are constantly working together to perform all necessary actions and deliver all desired results.

A web app functions just like a restaurant

So, as all customer requests are handled by the waiters of a restaurant, a web app’s front end handles all user interactions and requests. In a restaurant you will be interacting with a waiter, whereas with a web app you will be interacting with buttons, text boxes, or other controls.

When an order is placed by a customer, that order is sent to the back-of-the-house so the desired dish can be prepared. As you can see in the figure below, when a user makes a request in a web app, that request is sent to the application’s back end to be handled accordingly.

But, How does it differ with a Website? 😃

Website is delivering information that you can read.

But at the same time, when a website has facility for visitor to register and log in, use a tool, upload a picture, search for information (like Google), create your own profile, or upload a file, or do use website for a business activity, then it is called ‘web application’

Benefits of web application

• Web-based apps are accessible anywhere and anytime, as long as you have access to a device with an Internet connection
• It does not require a download or the installation of extra software
• It can be accessed on any device that has a Internet browser: PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc. But please keep in mind that mobile apps are not web apps! Many web apps do have mobile apps, like the Facebook App for Android and iPhone, but it has to be downloaded and installed.
• It needs an Internet connection, not only to access the web app but also to save the work you are doing while using the web app
• Popular examples are: Gmail, Facebook, Google, Google Docs, Wikipedia, Ebay, and IMDB
• Even if you lose your PC you don't need to worry about your data.
• You don't need to update the application like mobile apps; all the updates can be done on the server.
